Hello! My name is Kianna Mkhonza, and I'm a graphic designer and typesetter based in Toronto. I'm excited to pass this collection of my history/selected work as part of my application for the TV Listings Paginator position at TV Media. Thank you for your time and consideration; I hope to hear from you.

 ABOUT ME:

My academic background is a BFA in Cross-Disciplinary Arts: Printmaking and Publications from OCAD. This has equipped me with a unique skill set that bridges both printed and digital media; it’s this interdisciplinary education makes me so well-suited to handle a wide range of projects, from traditional print materials to digital content or systems maintenance.

My professional background includes:

➤ (Almost) one year as a Production Intern at Penguin Random House Canada, where I’ve honed my skills in typesetting and eBook production. I had the opportunity to work on diverse projects, including assisting the Creative Director of Tundra (a children’s book imprint) with design choices for middle-grade books and working a mix of cookbooks, trade paperbacks, hardcovers and mass market book files, handling both typesetting and design aspects.

➤ One year as a remote Design Assistant at Strike Design Studio. In this role, I worked on diverse projects ranging from logo design and branding to drafting content for the web. Now I know I can work independently to create cohesive visual identities and translate design concepts across different sorts of media, plus manage regular administrative duties at the same time.

➤ Experience as a graphic design intern at the Ottawa International Animation Festival, creating dynamic promotional content including advertisements, merchandise design, and imagery for the website and publications.

➤ Collaborations with Images Festival and Whippersnapper Gallery, focusing on social media graphics and printed publication design, which aligns well with your need for maintaining and growing social media presence.

➤A 3-month web developer residency, where I created an artist website from scratch using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, demonstrating my proficiency in web technologies crucial for maintaining and updating your website and online store.

NOTE

I've been working for the past nine months at Penguin Random House in Canada as a Production Intern, and I've never once missed a deadline. At Penguin, I've been getting to both typeset complex files in InDesign (like 300 page cookbooks) and work with HTML and CSS in the eBooks Department. Deadlines at the publisher are like a revolving door that never stops spinning, or a plate that's never quite empty no matter how much you eat (especially now as we enter the fall span) and I love it. I like the dance of dates, deadlines, and managing my own schedule. So I know I have the proficiency for meeting deadlines covered. I've taken a look at what else you've listed as the Responsibilities, Qualifications and Assets desired for the job—and I wanted to let you know how I meet those, too.

Paginate Editorial Content/Modify Templates/Pre-Press Tech Support:

While I'm not sure exactly how it's done at TV Media, I have a lot of experience taking a seemingly endless manuscript (whether by mining the material from an old ebook or dropping from Word) and setting it up into a real live book with pages, chapters, folios and whatever else the page design requires. Each project I've worked on has been vastly different, which has sometimes required me to get creative and learn something new. I know I can modify templates. Right now, I'm working on translating a Trade paperback IDD file sent over from the UK into one that will suit the Canadian marketplace as a mass market paperback. So taking what suits the current project, leaving what doesn't, and being discerning enough to know the difference. And at the end of the typesetting stage, for every single project, I conduct a preflight check using the Print Production features in Acrobat (or Indesign, depending) and fix any errors that pop up. Sometimes I will have to Google and Google and Google for an answer to a problems, but something I've learned is that there's almost always an answer to my problems.

Knowledge of CP Style/Eye for Detail/Proofing/Copy Editing:

As a Publications major, I am glad to say that I still have a copy of the Canadian Press Stylebook, though I admit it's been a while since I've opened it up. I would be happy to bring it out of hiding! On top of working as a typesetter at both large and small presses (which is more editorial focused than one might think, as we must look over the entire text after each pass of corrections, watching carefully for any possible introduction of mistakes), I've taken an editing course at Simon Fraser University where I learned more of the technical matters related to grammar and punctuation.

 PROJECT SAMPLES

 TAKE A LOOK

Here's a small sampling of work I've created! While I can't share everything (the projects I've worked on at Penguin are not yet available publicly), I hope the following selection of work represents a diverse range of ability including print and digital media, branding, typography, and web design. You'll find examples from my time at OIAF, my web residency with On-Display For-Review, my workshop zine with Whippersnapper Gallery and, below in the gallery section, some graphics I've created for either social media or print. They all share a glimpse into what I'd call my design aesthetic.

(This guide does not include the cover material, as that was designed by Matthew Rankin; my job was the design and typesetting of the guide's interior).
